TRUCK DRIVERS ARE IDIOTS PART 582: THE STUPID QUESTIONS

Stupid questions are part of my everyday dose of bullshit that is the truck driver.

Many of these drivers are stuck in their truck for hours, and when they get in front of you, all they want to do is talk. Here’s a hint: Shut the hell up. You’re late, your refrigeration unit isn’t even on, you don’t have your pickup number and you smell worse than dooky. I don’t want to talk to you and I don’t want to hear your life’s story.

I have compiled a list either stupid questions, or questions that they ask. I have also included commentary.

How much do these pallets weigh? – This is the prototypical question each driver asks when I see them. I have actually toyed with the idea of putting the weights on a huge sign on the wall, and I would, if I thought the vast majority of them could read.

How high are these pallets? – If the pallets were too high, we wouldn’t be able to put them on your truck. How high are YOU?

Do the berries only come in once a year? – No. Berries are part of a magical crop of fruit that grows year round in the same places, during the both the warmest and the coldest months of the year. Berries grow in heat. Berries grow in snow. Berries grow under water. Berries grow everywhere. Berries grow in the ground. Berries grow in the sea. Berries grow in rock. If you wiped your butt once and a while you might find a berry or two there as well. Nimrod.

So, what do you do after this season is over? – Uh, what do you care? You don’t know me. It doesn’t matter what I do. Whatever it is I’ll do, I’ll be doing it as far away from you as possible, if I can help it.

So you follow the berries all around the world? – Yes, I am like a mix of James Bond and Berry Stalker. I follow them globally, from Florida to Istanbul. I follow berries to exotic regions where they don’t even grow berries. I follow the berries home from work. I follow the berries home from school. I follow the berries home from when they go to the store. I peer at the berries through the windows of their homes. I read the berries’ mail. I sneak into the berries’ bedrooms when they are in the shower and write sick things in lipstick on their bedroom mirrors. Again, why do you care?

How long have you been doing this job? – It’s been about 5 years, but after talking to you it feels like 12.

Do you know the address where I am going? Or, do you know when my delivery appointment is? – Never fails to get to me. The address and appointment time is on the Bill of Lading that you are holding in your wretched hand, you moron.

How much is my broker getting for this load? – Do I look like your broker? If I do, shoot me.

Is there any way I can haul for your company without going through a broker? – Absolutely not. To do that, you would have to manage yourself as a professional business. And that is not possible. You smell bad and you look like a hobo.

How do they pick these berries? – The same way you pick your butt, by hand. The difference between you and them is that they wash their hands before and after the picking.

How long do berries stay good in the refrigerator? – Do I look like your wife? Your mother? The Produce Answer Man? They stay good until they are bad. If you eat them and you die, they’re no good. Bon appitite, jackass.

How do I get to your farm? – I love this one. This one is asked when they call me on the phone. They just naturally expect that I know exactly where they are when they call me. Like I have a GPS on the phone that gives the exact location of where they are calling from and have instant access to driving directions to get them here. I usually have to ask “Where are you right now?” and most of the time, they really don’t know.

So where do you live? – Right now, in Hell. Because I have to talk to you.

Want to hear a story? – No. As I mentioned earlier, you’re late, your refrigeration unit isn’t even on, you don’t have your pickup number and you smell worse than dooky. I don’t want to talk to you and I don’t want to hear a story.

One of these days…

The NC Update

Greetings, programs. (50 points for anyone who can tell me what movie that is from)

Well, I'm still stuck in Nowhere, NC, with very little time for anything resembling fun. It is like taking oxygen from my lungs. We have been very busy. I am quite depressed. No fun for Leebo.

Things are winding down and I am hopeful to be home for a few before my adventure in British Columbia. I like British Columbia very much, and I hope it will be fun.

My current North Carolina body count is 3 birds, a squirell, and angry hornet, a frog and a snake. I have killed all these things with Serenity, the PT Cruiser that will never forgive me for bringing it here again, but as long as she gets me back, it'll be ok.

I'm hoping that a.) I get to Wimington for some r+r and b.) I won't be here for the 4th of July. Though if I am, I'll watch the fireworks over the U.S.S. North Carolina and the Cape Fear river and think to myself that there could be worse places to be.

The plan is to be here through the weekend and see how next week shapes up.

I want two things upon my departure.

One, I want to buy some kick ass fireworks in South Carolina to bring back home. If I'm leaving after July 4th, well, I'll get them at half price and it'll be a helluva New Years.

And two, I want one day relaxing on a beach with the damn phone turned off.

Until then, I long for Florida.

Fun With The Immortal George Carlin

I present a tribute to George Carlin, a truly great individual.

  • The very existance of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, "You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I'm just not close enough to get the job done."

  • When cheese gets it's picture taken, what does it say?

  • Frisbeetarianism is the belief that when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck.

  • Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish, and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

  • Atheism is a non-prophet organization.

  • Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweaty things.

  • I have as much authority as the Pope, I just don't have as many people who believe it.

  • I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman, "Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told me, it would defeat the purpose.

  • I'm completely in favor of the separation of Church and State. My idea is that these two institutions screw us up enough on their own, so both of them together is certain death.

  • Just cause you got the monkey off your back doesn't mean the circus has left town.

  • Some people see things that are and ask, Why? Some people dream of things that never were and ask, Why not? Some people have to go to work and don't have time for all that.

  • You know an odd feeling? Sitting on the toilet eating a chocolate candy bar.

  • I don’t have pet peeves — I have major psychotic fucking hatreds!

  • I never fucked a ten, but one night, I fucked five twos.

  • What year did Jesus think it was?

  • And now, in the interest of equal time, here is a message from the National Institute of Pancakes: It reads, and I quote, “Fuck waffles.”

  • The planet is fine. The people are fucked.

George Carlin 1937-2008

So long, George and thanks for the funny. The Leeman will miss you.

Rest In Peace, George Carlin

Something very sad has happened and I feel like cussing.

George Carlin has passed away at the age of 71.

The Leeman feels this one, folks. George Carlin was one of the most brilliant, funniest people I ever heard in my life.

George Carlin actually cussed my mother out when she was working as a telephone operator at GTE back in Los Angeles in the 70’s. He later called her back and apologized. That shows how great George was, only he could cuss my mother out and instead of me wanting to kick his ass, I think it’s pretty cool.

I grew up listening to George. My parents hated him. That was enough to make me want to listen.

I remember the shock on my mother’s face when she found my TOLEDO WINDOW BOX album. On it, Geroge is wearing a shirt with a buncha pot leaves on it. Mom freaked, for that and various other reasons we won't get into here.

Good times.

There’s no way I can describe the love and respect I have for the man.

He was a great and insightful satirist, and absolutely brilliant in his comedic delivery. His wry observations on life, coupled with his calling-out of the hypocrisy of, well, just about everyone and everything, made him one of the most appealing comics I ever heard.

He bitched about EVERYTHING… but did it in a way that made you double over with laughter.

His material never got old because he could always find funny things about life and people… and then trash the living hell out of both.

Toledo Window Box.

Indecent Exposure.

FM/AM

Class Clown.

The seven words you can’t say on television.

Fucking brilliant.

He was a singular wit. A true original. A genius.

He shall be missed.

And boy, I bet God is getting an earful right now….

More Hatred Spewed Toward the Brother 7820 Printer

Interesting facts about the only printer that jams more than Clapton, the Brother 7820N Printer and Jamming Device Extraordinaire.

I’m sitting in my hotel room, it’s raining outside and I’m relaxing with a cold one… and still, The Brother 7820N printer pisses me off.

If they sent the Brother 7820N printer back in time to change history, history would not be changed, it would simply be stuck.

The Brother 7820N printer auditioned for the role of Col. Jack O’Neil in the STARGATE SG-1 TV series, but lost the role to Richard Dean Anderson. The Brother 7820N Printer’s range was limited. Limited. COMPARED TO RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON.

The Brother 7820N Printer voted for Ralph Nader back in 2004.

Mexicans don’t like the Brother 7820N Printer. The Brother 7820N Printer’s feelings toward Mexicans… remain unclear.

Bruce Lee once tried to devise a martial art based on the mechanics of the Brother 7820N Printer, but abandoned the project as he realized it involved one sticking one’s foot up their own ass.

The Brother 7820N drinks the cheapest, crappiest beer on the planet: Miller Genuine Draft.

If shit got the Brother 7820N Printer on it, shit would wipe it off.

That printer’s gotta be made of jam, cuz jelly don’t jam like that.

Years

Well, even though Colleen used the w-word (and she doesn't know me that well, so she doesn't know how much I truly HATE the w-word, so she's off the hook), I guess I'll go with this a little longer.

She says it takes years to develop a following on this thing. I really don't want that.

I also really don't want to pepper this this with ads and such. This isn't NASCAR. This is a Chronicle.

How does one meet folk in the blogiverse?

Someone tell me. I'm a savant. Someone has to tell me at least once (ok, twice) and then I'll know.

KILLING THE LEEBO SHOW

Well, I'm thinking of killing The Leebo Show off.

Sure, it's been a great way to blow off steam and chronicle my travels.

Of course, it's been a major funny. How could it not be? It's The Leebo Show.

Heck, yeah, I've really enjoyed doing it.

But really.... is anybody reading this junk?

I mean, I get people sending me e-mail or commenting on Myspace on how they love the blog.

But then I look at the blog and see nothing but "0 comments".

That dissapoints me. If you read the blog, comment on the blog. Yeesh.

I really wanted this blog thing to take off. Have some fun, maybe meet some new people.

The only things I've met are two birds, a squirrrel, and angry hornet and now, a snake. And I've killed them all. Oh, and I've met North Carolina Law Enforcement. Boy, were they fun.

It's not taking off.

I have reservations about continuing this endeavor.

It's going nowhere fast.

SKITTLES really satifies...

I'm not much of a candy eater. That having been said, my exile in Nowhere, North Carolina has taught me something.

I love Skittles.

I've been averaging a bag of Skittles a day. We have a vending machine here that produces a modest bag of them for a mere 65 cents. I have found this truly to be a bargain, as I have been consuming the tasty little devils at a substansial rate.

I love them too much. The other day the machine produced 2 bags instead of one. I grabbed both bags, retreated to my office and stuffed both bags down my gullet while laughing like a madman.

I've realized I have become the equivilent of a Skittle crack whore. One day the machine was out of them and I actually panicked.
I've eaten so many Skittles I'm afraid of crapping a rainbow.

Fortunately, an exchange between me and one of my co-workers helped me get things back in perspective. I was eating a bag of Skittles and he was talking about... oh, I don't know. I kind of tune things out when I eat Skittles.

He looked longingly at the bag. I looked back at him like a mother protecting her young. But reason and politelness prevailed. So I told him to hold out his hands and I proceeded to pour a modest portion into them.

His wife was standing beside him and glaring at him.

"I shouldn't have these," he explained. "I'm diabetic."

"Oh," I replied. "In that case take the whole thing."
And I poured the entire bag into his hands and walked away.

Maybe I'm really just addicted to comedy.

Either way, I've never really liked that guy.

The Brother 7820N: A complete piece of crap.

The Brother 7820N printer is, quite frankly, one of the single biggest pieces of shit technology ever conceived by human minds.

It’s paper jam capacity alone is exponential and defies logic or science.

If we could actually program how much it jams paper, we could send the technology to the Iranians and never have to worry about their capability for nuclear planning. Because said plans would be jammed constantly in a piece of shit Brother 7820N printer.

It works about as well as a left-handed spanner wrench.

I FEEL SAFE IN.... AH, SOUTHEASTERN NORTH CAROLINA ABSOLUTELY SUCKS!

So, after the end of my 184th 15 hour day, I leave the farm.

The big semi I just loaded was in my way. I have a single line on the road, I go to pass the truck.

The single line turns to a double line as I pass the truck. You know what's coming.

$170 citation from your stiff-ass-piece-of-human-garbage North Carolina State Trooper.

He tried to bait me into an arguement. He wanted to fight. He wanted some action.

I could have tried to explain about the line but something told me not to. I just said "I'm sorry" numerous times and let him do what he had already made his mind up to do anyway.

Something tells me I got off easy, being the out-of-towner and all.

One of mi Hispanic amigos told me this morning that the same cop was hassling him at the store around the corner just minutes before he popped me.

And get this... on my citation, under "race", the cop wrote "Hispanic".

The Leeman is NOT Hispanic. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

But now that North Carolina has officially rendered me Hispanic, I officially no longer feel safe in North Carolina.

Fuck this place.

06/16/08 - An addendum: The owner of this place says that they put up a roadblock looking for drunk Mexicans. I know I've been profiled... I just don't know if it's the drunk part or the Mexican part. Dos Mios!

TRUCK DRIVERS ARE IDIOTS PART 3... and they're big babies too.

Truck driver calls for directions (Like I'm not sick of that phone call after 5 weeks).

He's in Surf City, NC. About an hour and a half away from here.

I give him the directions. He doesn't understand because he's stupid. He's a truck driver.

After much conversing, he finally gets it. And he freaks and starts yelling at me.

"WHY THEY HELL DID HE GIVE ME THESE DIRECTIONS, I"M ALL THE WAY OUT HERE...DAMN IT, I GOTTA GO BACK!!!!!!"

I respond in kind.

"HOW THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHY? I'm not the guy who gave you the directions, but I can get ya here!"

There's a pause.

"Well, you don't have to yell at me," he says.

Yeesh.

Well, I'm sorry you got your little feelings hurt.

Jackass.

The Leeman is....Lord of the Flies!!!

Flies.

Southeastern Nowhere, North Carolina.... has more flies than I have ever encountered. I've never seen so many goddamned flies. They're everywhere. Where do they come from?

Flies.

I have become adept with a fly swatter. It has become my light saber and I have become a Fly Jedi. I kill at least 3 to 6 flies a day. I have become Death. Death to the flies. One thing is for certain.... I'm pretty fly... for a white guy.

Flies.

There're everywhere. You can't sit down anywhere, be it a store, a restaraunt, a park, a.... well, there's not much else here... without seeing a damnable fly. They're everywhere.

Flies.

Even in my own damn office, I have a fly graveyard, the scattered corpses of dead flies litter the landscape and look like the creative vision of a sick freak making a damn fly version of Apocolypse Now. And I'm freakin' Robert Duvall....I love the smell of fly napalm in the morning.

Flies.

They're almost as bad as truck drivers.

Almost.

At least flies I can kill.

Leebo's Road Kill Circus: The Current Tally

My current roadkill tally is now:

two birds

a squirrel

an angry hornet

and a snake

As long as a deer isn't added to that list, I'm in good shape.

I've been here 33 days. I'm in the home stretch. Bring on home and BC.

TRUCK DRIVERS ARE STILL IDIOTS

So, last night, our truck that was supposed to be here in Nowhere, North Carolina at 5pm calls at 5pm and informs me he is 300 miles away.

And of course it's a priority loading. They're all a priority loading. It matters not if you've worked 2 weeks straight for 12-15 hours a day. They want it loaded at 4am, if that is the case.

Of course, the driver sometimes comes in late, loads and goes down the street, pulls over, and sleeps. So really, what have you gained?

Still, we're in produce, so the concept of actual sleep is about as real as the concept of Bigfoot.

So. I'm on the phone all night with this dumbass driver, with the cellphone going out constantly, trying to get him into the farm.

I've gotten excellent compliments on my directions this year. I don't even live here and I've gotten guys into the farm from all directions. But in order to play this game, you have to be able to read and write.

This driver could do or spell neither.

He didn't follow my instructions. At 1am he was on the North Carolina coast at Wrightsville Beach. Overshot by an hour and half. He did this with me talking to him the whole time.

I finally got him into the farm just before 3am. Been a long night.

Truck drivers are idiots.

A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO MAKE ELIZABETHTOWN, NC INTERESTING...PART 2

I GOT MY PENICLLLLLLLLLLLL......... gimme somethin' to write on, man.....

A DESPERATE ATTEMPT TO MAKE ELIZABETHTOWN, NC INTERESTING...

This murial is of an astronaut that apparently is from here in Bladen County, NC. It's on the side of the hardware shop in Liz-town.
Interesting.....
Ok, It really isn't. I'm ready to go home now.

Let's hoist one to 5 O'Clock Charlie

This is a picture of 5 O'Clock Charlie. The picture was taken about 1PM.
We named him after the M.A.S. H. episode.
Charlie actually gets in his plane and buzzes around the farm spraying the proper sprays on the berries. He does this, on certain days, all damn day.
He starts at 7am. I know this from staying on the farm last year. Blondie, My Mexican Bodyguard, says Charlie still wakes his ass up some mornings.
5 O'Clock Charlie is one crazy sunnuvabitch.
I took this picture outside my office, in the lot next to one of the trucks, while Charlie was buzzing the building. He did this for about an hour. The truck drivers were freaking because he was buzzing them outside in the lot. He was actually buzzing the building. With all of us inside. It's a regular occurance. Everyone thinks it's a hoot. I do too.
This man flies around the farm and does crazy stuff. I literally have seen this guy fly under power lines. He's insane. He's completely out of his mind.
I love that guy.

I'm having ramdom chaotic thoughts in North Carolina...

MY MIND IS WANDERING....

I think a good name for a band would be Clattering Shatner.

I had someone say that I shouldn't wear my "Remember The Alamo" T-shirt around the Mexicans I work with. I replied "Why? They won, didn't they?"

To date, no Mexican I work with has been traumatized by my "Remember the Alamo" T-Shirt.

Why would the cleaning people in my hotel clean the room but leave the pizza box? Twice?

There's really no berry in the world like a blueberry. Unless you count all those other berries.

When you attack a Mexican guy wearing a wrestling mask, they draw their knife, but they don't cut you, they smile and think you're really, really cool.

I think when people in British Columbia are asking you a month ahead of time when you are going to British Columbia, it bodes well for a real good time in British Columbia.

I can't wait to go somewhere where there are no deer heads on the walls. I don't like looking at walls that look back.

Bruce Nessler, I'm glad you looked me up you crazy sunnuvabitch. I'm looking forward to the clink.

When you haven't had it for 2 weeks, my God, it's amazing what 8 hours of sleep will do.

TRUCK DRIVERS ARE IDIOTS

And now I must vent.

Let this be known to all throughout this universe, throughout history, and throughout all time... The Leeman HATES truck drivers.

This hatred is not irrational. This hatared is not haphazard. This hatred has been throughly nutured and cultivated through many days and mainly nights of dealing with their sorry, stupid asses.

Not all truck drivers are bad. Some of them are pretty good at what they do. A few are actually smart. Smart enough to bathe. But they are few and far between. Most truck drivers are idiots.

If you are a truck driver, and you haul produce loads, there's something wrong with you. Chances are, you're a f-ing idiot. Society dropped you on your head and it didn't do anything but crack the linoleum on the floor. Your retardation is the stuff of legend. Yogi Bear could outthink you and he is a cartoon. And come to think of it, so are you. An angry, stupid, smelly, hungry little cartoon. You are a life reject. The Leeman hates you.

You want examples on how dumb truck drivers can be? I got 'em. Hell, I'm writing a book. Portions of that book could very well appear on THE LEEBO SHOW, too. It's rich with comedic frustration, just like me dealing with truck drivers.

But let's just take yesterday for a good example.

Not only did I have drivers coming in to pick up blueberries with their refrigeration units not on, but the following actually happened.

Truck driver comes in, says he has a load to pick up.

"What order are you picking up?" I ask.

"Blueberries," he says.

Well, the day's off to a fine start.

"Your order, dude," I tell him. "What order number are you picking up? What's your pickup number?"

He proceeds to tell me he doesn't have a pickup number.

Sigh.

"Can't load your truck without an pickup number, dude, go call The Dispatcher and get your pickup number, " I tell him.

So the driver goes to his truck and I go back to whatever it is I do.

My phone rings. Hello?

It's the truck driver. "Yeah, I'm callin' to get my pickup number."

I look out the window and he's standing there on the phone. With me. Just outside my office window.

I decide to screw with him a little. "OK, let me just ask you...we've been trying to get ahold of you all day... where are you? ... are you at the pickup?"

"Yeah."

"At the farm."

"Yeah. I'm at the farm. The guy in the office says I need a pickup number. The sorry son of a bitch."

"OK," I say. "I need you to do something for me.....turn around and look in the Shipping Office window."

He turns around and looks. I wave to him with the phone in my ear.

"I'm not the sorry son of a bitch you have to GET THE NUMBER FROM, you jackass," I tell him. "I'm the sorry son of a bitch YOU HAVE TO GET THE NUMBER TO." I'm waving at him the whole time I'm saying this.

His eyes bug out of his head.

"Oh. uh.... sorry..." he says.

One day I am going to decide that I want truck drivers out of my life FOREVER.

And that... is going to be one interesting day.

I FEEL SAFE IN NORTH CAROLINA, PART 2

So... I'm driving the great PT Cruiser named Serenity back to the hotel around 10:30pm, after my 16 hour stressful day, through the dark and winding back roads of Nowhere, North Carolina.

One of my biggest fears is running into a deer. I've been told "If you want to see deer around here, drive fast." So, I am driving nice and slow.

And I come around the corner and there one is. The first (live) deer I've seen the entire time I have been here. That's counting last year too.

I've seen a lot of deer here staring at me from various walls. This is the first one I have ever seen actually breathing. And I'm grateful, not just for the opportunity, but for the fact that he's not on my current body count tally (See post "An impressive body count").

He's standing in the middle of S.R. 210 just looking at me. I stop and stare right back. He's a majestic looking animal, big ol' antlers and eyes glowing in my lights. He's actually quite beautiful.

I find myself asking why someone would want to shoot such a fine looking animal. I'll have to ask whoever owns the establishment who's wall that deer's head will grace in the future that very question later on.

So I edge Serenity closer and he bounds in to the woods. Wow.

I continue my 28 mile journey to the hotel, driving slowly, driving slowly. My head is poundng and it feels like someone has a huge clamp on the back of my neck. It's been a very stressful day. I need sleep. I need truck drivers out of my life.

I get to the intersection of S.R. 210 and S.R. 41 and who is there to greet me? That's right, your friendly neighborhodd stiff-ass North Carolina State Troopers. Four of them to be exact. One on each corner of the intersection.

Now I have noticed one thing about the cops around here. They are all stiff. I mean really stiff. Stick-up-the-ass-go-to-church-3-times-on-Sunday-no-sense-of-humor-watch-a-lot-of-C-Span stiff.

The policeman walks up to my car and I roll the window down, resisting any tired attempt at humor and instantly chucking the "Got any tickets to the Ball?" joke to the mental weeds.

He asks me to get out of the car. I comply. He asks for my license, I give it to him. He walks around my car, giving it and my Florida license the serious once-over.

He hands my license back. "You been drinking this evening, sir?" he asks.

"No sir, I've been working." I reply.

"Working?"

"Yes, sir. On the blueberry farm. Late night tonight."

"Where you heading?" he asks.

"Days Inn Elizabethtown, sir. I've had a long day and I have to be up early tomorrow. I have a date with my pillow."

Now at this point, he looks me up and down. He literally looks me up and down. I felt like meat.

Then he says "You have a safe weekend, sir."

"I'm working all weekend, officer, I don't really have a choice," I reply.

Allright, maybe I didn't resist all attempts at humor.

But the look on his face proved one thing I already knew.

Many people in North Carolina don't find me very amusing.
